On Sept. 16, 1810, revolutionary Mexican priest Miguel Hidalgo declared the independence of Mexico from Spain.
What a sight to see this day, almost 200 years later, it is still recognized and celebrated by so many.Pasadena Villa Park Community Center celebrated Mexican Independence Day on Friday with food, fun and entertainment.
The celebration began at 3pm on Sept. 14 with the coronation of the queen of the day, an adorable court of young girls dressed in white dresses escorted by young gentlemen.

The mariachi group San Antonio, offered an array of classic Mexican songs to entertain as the crowd feasted on authentic Mexican food, including tacos and enchiladas. “We’re here to listen to the mariachis and have a good time,” said Emilia Acosta, 56, who brought her three grandchildren to the celebration. “It’s important to keep the Mexican Independence Day alive so my grandkids can keep the tradition going.”

Children enjoyed viewing the soccer tournament and tables of classic games they could play. Surprisingly, many sponsors turned out with their own booths to advertise.

Among them was the healthcare agency, Los Angeles County’s Pacific Clinics, who specialize in mental health services for both children and adults. Representatives from the Pasadena Water & Power Department spoke to children about the importance of saving energy with fun games and prizes.

The Pasadena Fire Department arrived in a huge fire truck and welcomed children and parents to tour the truck letting them climb aboard and ask questions about the instruments inside and details about their job. “This is a great opportunity for the kids to have fun, and we as parents get informed about the services in the area,” said Sylvia Morales, 32, a Pasadena native and mother of two. “Sometimes we don’t know where to go for help and information.
