Sophomore Harold Cleveland scored a school record 48 points in PCC’s opening loss to San Jose at the San Jose City College Tip Off Tournament on Friday. Unfortunately for the Lancers, no other player scored more than eight points in the 88-73 loss.Cleveland shot 15 of 32 from the field and was 6 of 13 from three-point range. He also led the defense with six steals. “It was one of those games,” Head Coach Michael Swanegan said, “Cleveland could have had 55.”

Although Swanegan was impressed with this performance, he kept Cleveland’s record setting game in perspective, “We’re not expecting that from him every night. If he consistently scores 15 or 17 points a game, we will be happy with that.”

With the opening loss also came the beginning of a new era, as Swanegan coached his first game at the helm of PCC’s men’s basketball program. Swanegan has the daunting task of turning around a program that has struggled in the recent past, with a combined record of 17-42 over the past two years.

“Its going to be a struggle this year because we’re rebuilding” Swanegan said, “But I wouldn’t have taken this job if I didn’t think it could be better.”

Swanegan has the challenge of coaching a team with an average height of 6?2″ with only two returning sophomores. He has the experience to succeed, as he coached conference rival Mt. SAC to the state playoffs seven times in his eight seasons there.

The Lancers followed the opener with a loss to Skyline 74-59. Cleveland followed his record setting performance with 13 points against the Trojans.

The Lancers head to Fullerton today for another tournament, opening against Antelope Valley. From there they continue their road trip to Palomar, L.A. Harbor, Riverside and Rancho Cucamonga before they play their home opener against L.A. Southwest on December 19.
