College students everywhere are finding that expenses for gas, books and even tuition are burning a hole through their pockets. Those on campus until mid-afternoon find themselves easily burning that hole further with the cost of food. Not everyone can afford a grande caramel frappachino from Starbucks every day at $4.10 a pop.
Affordable food often means “fast food.” So, are there any cost-effective ways of satisfying your hunger with quality food without bouncing tomorrow’s checks?
Absolutely. Pasadena offers an array of inexpensive food venues that won’t cause you to break the bank.

For those who long for the authentic Mexican experience with fresh made tortillas, there is Dona Rosa Bakery & Taqueria.

At 577 S. Arroyo Pkwy., its famous burritos start at $7.10 and combination plates, which are more than enough for two people, start at $8.60.

For evening kicks, enjoy a $4 margarita or a cold beer on the outdoor terrace.

If you want Mexican food but lack the time to sit down, there is King Taco, 45 N. Arroyo Pkwy., which offers authentic carne asada, pork and beef entrée’s starting at $1.25 a taco and $3.75 for a burrito or quesadilla.

For the Sushi lover, Afloat Sushi at 87 E. Colorado Blvd., offers a wide variety of rolls and sashimi, starting at $1.95 for California rolls and $3.75 for shrimp rolls.

The artistic floating boat buffet is a fun way to eat out, and happy hour, 3 to 5 p.m., offers 30 percent off on all entrées. The menu includes hot or chilled Sake.

For plain old-fashioned American food, by far the best deal for drinks and fine food’s is at McCormick & Schmick’s.

At 111 N. Los Robles Ave., Smick’s offers its famous $1.95 happy hour bar menu from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on weekdays and after 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Happy drinking and snacking includes a half-pound cheeseburger or Cajun Burger, Baja fish Tacos, oyster shooters, and fresh mozzarella Bruschetta.

Happy hour prices extend to certain drinks weekly. The first week of the month may include $3.75 Martini’s and the next week may see $3.50 wine by the glass and beer orders – an affordable compromise to say the least.

Whatever food you crave there is always an easy alternative if you know where to look.
