Marlene Beltran, a.k.a Miss Mar Belos, took viewers on a provocative and slightly uncomfortable journey through her past experiences with Love <3 Lust in the spirit of Dia de los Muertos on Nov. 3.

Free food and drinks were provided in the WIFI Lounge by the Cross Cultural Center as incentive to draw in viewers for original music and spoken word by Beltran.

“I think that the relationships that we have really influence our lives,” said Beltran. “They make such a big impact that I think everyone should look back and honor those times and try to learn from them.”

A traditional Dia de los Muertos shrine with tequila, wine, deserts and candies was the center piece of the performance. For each relationship mentioned, Beltran, who was dressed in traditional Dia de los Muertos garb with her face painted and a flower in her hair, would place a skull decorated with fluorescent paint somewhere on the altar.

She then proceeded to sing jazzy songs and recite poetry inspired by each one of her lovers with titles such as “The one who couldn’t keep a job” and “The one who made my mouth water.”

Beltran played with the audience’s emotions by taking breaks between sad songs to jump around and play the tambourine only to sink back into the melancholic memories of love lost.

Although Beltran is not a student at PCC she performs often in the Pasadena area.
