Large canvases, sculptures, and various other forms of art are gathered in the PCC Art Gallery for the annual Faculty Exhibit, which opened Sept. 7.

Gallery Director, Brian Tucker has been busy preparing for “Core Sample”, a showcase of faculty work.

“The set up for the show is a long process – emails, preparing the gallery, layout of what goes where  – which is my responsibility,” Tucker said. “Charles John puts what goes on the walls and students also help with the preparation.

“Thirty to 40 artists are in the show each year,” Tucker said.

“Core Samples” showcases works that range from jewelry to graphic design to a variety of fine arts media, according to the gallery announcement.

One of the works on show is by Instructor Yolanda Mc Kay, who teaches sculpture and drawing and has been doing professional sculpture work for over 27 years.

“Students are hopefully stimulated by looking at the faculty exhibition,” she said of her experience with the show.

Illustration Instructor Rick Osaka will be showing a recent multi-media painting based on a trip to Japan and Boyle Heights.  He is enthusiastic about the show.

“The faculty shows are a chance to show our students that the creative process continues, even after the college years,” he said.  “Maintaining a practice is fulfilling and hopefully it will inspire the students to keep growing and experimenting.”

Mc Kay, who has participated in the faculty shows since about 1984, said “It is a chance for faculty and students who have asked what I do, to finally see it,”

Mc Kay enjoys taking her students to see the shows and seeing them talk about the art when they go in.

Osaka shares his view of the show “There is a positive charge in art and I hope it is contagious,” he said.

The show runs through Sept. 24 at the PCC Art Gallery. The gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Saturday noon to 4 p.m.  Admission is free.  For recorded information call:  626-585-3285.
