Thirteen candidates faced off at the Associated Students Annual Candidates Forum on Tuesday in the Amphitheater.
This year the three candidates competing for ASPCC President in the 2008 spring general elections are Christina Javier, Josh Acevedo, Irving Williams.
One of the main issues was regarding environmental sustainability on campus.
“Recycling is important, but I also want to put an emphasis on conserving. If we watch what we waste, things would be much better,” said Javier.
Acevedo said: “As president, I’ll make sure to promote recycling issues. I’ll put recycle bins everywhere on campus and make PCC a more beautiful place.”
When it was his time to speak, Williams explained how he would make the
campus greener.
He said: “If I want to make a change, I’ll start with myself and plant flowers on campus.”
Two slates are running in this year’s 2008 Associated Students Elections. Pasadena’s Party for Progress (PPP), which has a full slate of candidates for all 11 positions is headed by Javier, and It’s Not About Color (INAC), has two members with Williams as the president. Six candidates are running independently.
The three candidates running for Vice President of Academic Affairs are Connor Lewis (PPP), Nicole Mafonde, and Hendy Soegiarto.
Vice President of Cultural Diversity candidates are Cristina Abadia (PPP), and Kimberly Mendoza.
Running for Vice President of Business Affairs are Devin Leung (PPP) and Joy Mak.
The two candidates running for Student Trustee are John Campo (PPP) and Akeem Mair (INAC).
Running unopposed for their position is Paulo Rodriguez (PPP) for Vice President of Internal Affairs, Lauren Crisci (PPP) for Vice President of Student Services, Joan Tibay (PPP) for Vice President of Campus Activities, Marshall Roe (PPP) for Vice President of Public Relations, Mazen Ali (PPP) for Vice President of External Affairs and Garbo Tat (PPP) for Chief Justice.
The A.S. represents the interests of the students at PCC. The A.S. President represents the students on many college committees like the Student Services Fund, the Bookstore Committee, the Food Services Committee, the College Coordinating Council, and the Lobby Fee Fund. The ASPCC President proposes changes on campus through her or his voice.
PPP has been endorsed by the Caduceus Club, Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Students Beyond Borders and Tropa (Filipino Club).
PCC’s Black Student Alliance has endorsed INAC’s candidates Williams and Mair.
Current ASPCC President Michael Sansosti has endorsed Josh Acevedo for President.
“I think he has a tremendous amount of experience. He has the ability to be a great leader and to get the job done,” said Sansosti.
Sansosti has also endorsed Crisci, Tibay and Ali.
