The three remaining sophomores from this season’s women’s basketball team have all yet to sign letters of intent to four-year universities, but all have Division I aspirations.
Lynette Jacobs has already verbally committed to Texas Southern, a Division I program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), but still has visits to Robert Morris (Moon Township, PA) and Xavier of Louisiana.
“I’m still going on visits to see my options,” Jacobs said. “But I’m [probably going] to Texas Southern.”
Jacobs already has Division I experience as a freshman at San Jose State, where she averaged 8.2 points and three rebounds a game off the bench. Jacobs transferred to PCC after San Jose struggled through a 5-26 season. After transferring, Jacobs went on to average 12.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists for the Lancers last season.
Texas Southern and first year Head Coach Serena Dixon impressed both Jacobs and teammate Kieisha Phelps, who visited the campus together in April.
“I like the coach,” Jacobs said. “They [run] about the same style that we had with Coach [Joe] Peron.”
“They have some good players [on the team],” Phelps said.
Texas Southern finished with a record of 8-20 last season and enters the 2008-2009 in their first year under Dixon.
If Dixon were to sign Phelps and/or Jacobs, she would be the third SWAC coach to sign a Lancer women’s basketball player this year. Morgan Bennett signed with Alcorn State and Florence Wilson signed with Arkansas-Pine Bluff in April.
Phelps is also planning to visit Robert Morris and Xavier with Jacobs and has already visited Pine Bluff. Despite Wilson’s presence, Phelps has ruled Pine Bluff out.
Phelps and Jacobs also visited Langston University (Oklahoma), but said they were no longer considering it as an option.
Peron is encouraged by how his player’s talent will convert to success at the next level.
“[Jacobs] was the most exciting open court player all year, and Kieisha will be dominant wherever she goes to school,” Peron said.
Anna Magganas the remaining sophomore on the team, has enrolled at UC Santa Barbara and intends to take a year off from basketball, according to Lancer Assistant Coach La’Nette Dillard. Magganas has left the possibility of playing basketball in the 2009-2010 season open.
Magganas transferred to PCC from Cal State Fullerton, where she had her season cut short by injury as a freshman.
