There’s no need to drive to make it through Los Angeles.

It’s 8:30 a.m, you already overslept and there’s no time to take a shower. Class starts at 9 a.m. and the only way you’ll make it to class on time is if you grab whatever is in the closet and go. Once you’ve managed to get inside the car, all that’s needed is starting the car. But you realize that it will not start. For those who fall into this situation, there are a few alternatives that can help. One of the options is public transportation. Buses, subways and even taxis are some alternatives you have in order to get to your destination. The Metro Gold line is only a few blocks away from PCC with train stops on Lake and Allen Avenue. Right in front of the U Building, there is a shuttle available for students to get to the train station.Metro buses and Metro rails provide day passes that cost $5 and take you all over the city or you can choose to pay $1.25 per ride. It’s even cheaper for college students who can get discounts on monthly and weekly passes, according to Metro.“If I didn’t have a car I think I would take the bus,” said Steven Gaffney, 19.Prices can vary depending on which bus you take. City buses cost between 25 cents and a dollar, depending on how your destination is.Taxi services charge around $2.65 for the flag drop (1/7 mile or 47.5 second), after that each additional 1/7-mile costs 35 cents.“I would call a cab because the bus takes too long and [the taxi] is more direct,” said Celia Tran, 19.Another way you can get to where you are going is by riding a bicycle. It not only gets you from point A to point B, it also helps you get some exercise in the process.“My first option would be bike,” said Sepideh Monzavi, 18.Many locations have bicycle stands available in order to keep them secure. If you are going on a long trip, you can always ride your bicycle and the bus since they also provide a place to store them.Walking is also a way to survive in Los Angeles when there’s no car available, depending on the length of the trip. This is a healthy way to get around since it burns calories and adds exercise to your day, say experts. If your destination is beyond any of these options you can always carpool with someone to get to your destination. You might have to chip in for gas money, but it will help you survive in L.A. if you don’t have a car.“I would ask my friends for rides or at least try to,” said Allion Porcell, 19.If you don’t know anyone near by that travels the same way, Metro provides a car pool service that helps you contact people near by that share the same destination.
